A hospital ship of the Chinese navy has docked at the port of Abidjan and is offering free medical consultations and medicines to residents of Côte d'Ivoire, Africanews reports.

The visit

  • The ship arrived on Thursday with a crew of 376.
  • Consultations continue until 21 October.
  • Patients receive checkups and medicines without charge.

One patient, Kassoum Azoumana, said he had come for checkups after hearing about the ship and was impressed by the welcome and the quality of the equipment.

Vice Admiral Célestin N'guessan Kouame, chief of staff of the Ivorian navy, described the visit as naval diplomacy and said the ship was bringing people joy and a little health. Ivorian authorities said it also gave the two navies a chance to share experience.

Africanews noted that China, long known in Africa for trade, is increasingly active in humanitarian work in the Gulf of Guinea.
