Editorial standards and corrections

How we report, what you can expect from us, and how to tell us when we get something wrong.

Our commitment

Pan Africa News Media reports on Africa and its diaspora with accuracy, fairness and independence. We aim to explain as well as inform, and to treat the people we report on with respect.

Accuracy and verification

We verify facts before we publish. We seek more than one source for contested claims and say plainly when something could not be confirmed. Every story is reviewed and approved by an editor before it appears on this site.

Sources and attribution

We name our sources wherever we can. We grant anonymity only when a source faces real risk and the information matters to the public, and an editor must know who the source is. When we build on another outlet's reporting we credit it and link to it. We do not plagiarise.

News and opinion

News reports and opinion are kept separate. Opinion pieces are labelled and reflect the view of the author, not of Pan Africa News Media.

Independence

Our editorial decisions are made by our journalists. Advertisers, sponsors, funders and governments do not decide what we cover or how. Advertisements are labelled. Our journalists declare conflicts of interest to their editor and do not accept payment or gifts in return for coverage.

Fairness and right of reply

People and organisations facing serious allegations in our reporting are given a fair opportunity to respond before publication, and their response is reflected in the story.

Care for vulnerable people

We take particular care when reporting on children, on victims of violence or abuse, and on people in grief or danger. We avoid details that would identify them or put them at risk unless there is a clear public interest.

Images, video and artificial intelligence

We do not alter photographs or video in ways that mislead. Illustrations and archive footage are identified as such. If generative AI is used in the making of a piece, a person remains responsible for it and anything that could be mistaken for a real photograph, recording or quotation is labelled.

Corrections

When we make a mistake we fix it promptly and say so. A significant correction is noted on the story itself, stating what was wrong and when it was corrected. We do not quietly delete errors.

To report an error, write to newsroom@panafricanewsmedia.com with a link to the story and a description of the problem. We aim to reply within two working days.

Complaints

If you are not satisfied with how a correction request was handled, write to the same address with “Complaint” in the subject line and it will be reviewed by a senior editor who was not involved in the original story.
