Vegetable growers in Moretele, in South Africa's North West province, now have somewhere to grade, wash, pack and cool their produce close to home. MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Madoda Sambatha handed over the Cassper Agri-Life Vegetable Packhouse in Mogogelo Village, the provincial department said.

What was built

  • A fully equipped packhouse for grading, sorting, washing, packaging and storage
  • Production tunnels to grow more vegetables
  • A borehole and a backup generator
  • Mobile cold rooms, so produce stays fresh on the way to market

The beneficiary is farmer Thapelo Madumo. The department expects higher production, better access to markets, jobs and economic growth in Moretele. Bojanala Platinum District Executive Mayor Suzan Nthangeni told residents that farming is the future.

Part of a bigger plan

This is the department's third packhouse. The first two are the MOR Farming Packhouse in Lekwa-Teemane and the Jantjies Boerdery Lucerne Packhouse in Greater Taung, which bales, packs and stores animal feed. The idea is the same each time: small farmers lose money when they cannot sort, pack and keep produce cold, and shared facilities let them sell to bigger buyers.
