ABUJA, Nigeria — Customers are complaining bitterly about rising food prices at Wuse Market, located in the Wuse district of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, as the cost of basic food items continues to put pressure on household budgets.

Elizabeth Wande, a trader at the market, says many customers can no longer afford to buy the quantities of food they need for their families. According to her, the money that customers bring to the market is no longer enough to meet their everyday food needs.

Another trader, Helen John, says the prices of essential food items have become increasingly difficult for customers to manage. She explains that a single onion can cost as much as ₦500, while tomatoes and peppers are also selling at high prices.

The rising costs mean that customers often leave the market with fewer items, even when they spend the same amount of money as before. For many households, this makes it increasingly difficult to plan meals and manage limited budgets.

Wuse Market is an important shopping destination for residents of Abuja and surrounding communities. However, the experiences shared by traders highlight the challenges consumers face as they try to cope with the rising cost of everyday food items.

For families already struggling to balance their income with daily expenses, the continued rise in food prices adds another burden, making affordable access to basic necessities a growing concern.
