Lending by Ghana's banks has picked up sharply. Gross loans and advances rose 34.6% to GH¢128.3 billion by the end of August 2026, compared with growth of 10% a year earlier, according to the Bank of Ghana's September Monetary Policy Report, MyJoyOnline reports.

Where the money went

  • The private sector's share of all credit rose to 96.1%, from 95.5%.
  • Lending to the public sector grew 16.1%, after shrinking by 26.9% a year earlier.
  • Services took the biggest share of loans, 37.7%, followed by commerce and finance (22.4%) and construction (11.3%).
  • Those three sectors together took 71.3% of lending, down from 73.5%, a sign of slightly more diversified lending.

The central bank attributes the expansion to stronger lending to the private sector and a rebound in credit to the public sector.
