Durban finishes R232.6m of flood defences for its industrial south
A rebuilt canal, a new sea outfall and a sports field that doubles as a flood basin are meant to protect Prospecton, one of the country's manufacturing hubs.

Durban — eThekwini Municipality has completed three stormwater projects worth R232.6 million in the South Durban Basin, to protect the industrial area of Prospecton from flooding, the government news agency SAnews reports.
The three projects
- Prospecton Road canal, R180 million: 1.96 km of canal rebuilt with a concrete base and vertical walls to carry more water, plus a 1.3 km walkway and two taxi lay-bys. Finished in June 2026 after 26 months.
- Clark Road sea outfall, Isipingo, R46 million: 350 m of culverts and a 100 m section pushed under the beach dune, so that stormwater reaches the sea faster in heavy rain. The dune has been fully restored.
- Umlazi Mission-A sports field, R6.6 million: the field was lowered by 1.5 to 2 m so that it can hold stormwater during a storm and release it slowly, then re-grassed for community use.
The three were designed together, based on hydraulic modelling of the catchment, to slow water upstream, drain it through Prospecton and send it out to sea.
The South Durban Basin supports thousands of jobs and is a key link in national and international supply chains. The city manager, Musa Mbhele, said manufacturers and investors need confidence in the infrastructure they depend on, and asked residents not to dump waste in canals and to report blocked drains.
