"Our people must see the benefits of regional integration in their everyday lives." That was the message Anthony Oluwatosin Ogunjimi, vice-president of the ECOWAS Commission, took to the African Development Bank in Abidjan on 12 October, ECOWAS said.

He met the bank's acting vice-president for regional development, integration and business delivery, Abdul Kamara, to review the long partnership between the two institutions and set out the Commission's priorities for the next four years under ECOWAS Vision 2050, with an emphasis on moving from plans to results.

On the table

  • Regional infrastructure, especially the Abidjan–Lagos Corridor
  • Trade and investment
  • Early warning and conflict prevention
  • Human capital and youth employment
  • Preparing bankable regional projects under the ECOWAS Community Development Programme

The bank proposed a more structured, regular platform for the two institutions to review priorities, tackle delays and follow through on what they agree. Both sides said projects must move faster and translate into lasting improvements in people's livelihoods and opportunities across West Africa.
