Ghana's cabinet backs a formal bid to join BRICS
Accra has asked India to support its application as it looks to widen its economic and diplomatic partnerships, the foreign minister says.

Accra — Ghana's cabinet has approved a decision to apply formally for membership of the BRICS bloc, the country's foreign minister has said, according to Africanews.
The minister made the announcement during a visit with his Indian counterpart. He said Ghana had already asked India to back the application, and presented the move as a way of diversifying the country's economic and diplomatic partnerships.
India's foreign minister said New Delhi supported Ghana's ambition, but stressed that any new membership would have to be considered by the wider group.
A growing bloc
BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China as a grouping of emerging economies, and has expanded in recent years with the aim of bringing together countries of the global south. Its African members are South Africa, Ethiopia and Egypt. Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are also members.
