Nairobi — Eighty-four Kenyans have been killed or are missing in the war between Russia and Ukraine, Kenya's Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs says, according to reports collected by AllAfrica.
The ministry has identified 354 Kenyan nationals involved in the conflict. It gives this breakdown of the others:
- 77 are on the front lines;
- 38 are in military camps;
- 52 are at unknown locations;
- 34 are in hospital;
- 62 have been brought home;
- five are held as prisoners of war in Ukraine.
Recruited by deception
The government says it will continue diplomatic efforts and strengthen measures against deceptive recruitment.
After a visit to Moscow by the foreign minister, Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya agreed with Russia that recruitment would stop, and granted an amnesty to those who return.
One recruiter, Festus Arasa Omwamba of Global Faces Human Resources, has been charged with deceiving 22 young men. An intelligence report cited in the coverage puts the number of Kenyans recruited at more than 1,000 and says rogue officials colluded with trafficking networks.
