Cairo — Samson Adamu has been confirmed as general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the first Nigerian to hold the post in the organisation's 70-year history.
Adamu joined CAF at its Cairo headquarters as director of competitions and was later made director of tournaments and events. He became acting general secretary on 29 March, after Veron Mosengo-Omba resigned.
The Nigeria Football Federation welcomed the news. Its acting general secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, called Adamu highly knowledgeable and "well-rounded in the business of football administration", and said the federation would give him its full support.
The appointment is being seen as a boost for Nigeria's voice in how African football is run.
