Recovery teams in south-western Nigeria are struggling to reach the wreckage of a military aircraft that crashed on Monday in Ondo State, killing 25 people, according to AFP and Africanews.

The plane came down in a swampy area near the town of Igbokoda. The wreckage is under water, and mangroves and murky conditions are slowing the work. The flight recorders have not yet been located, and it was not clear from the report whether any bodies had been recovered.

Those on board were a mix of military personnel and civilians.

What witnesses saw

Omotayo Orimisan, a resident who has been helping with the search, told the agency the aircraft was flying across the creek when its tail broke away with a loud noise. Another villager said the rescue teams had been working without rest since the crash.

President Bola Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning. The crash is among Nigeria's worst air disasters in recent years. No cause has been given.

This report is based on reporting by Africanews and AFP.
