Somalia's National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has set federal parliamentary elections for 15 April 2027 and the presidential election for 15 May 2027, Shabelle Media reports.

The timetable

  • Registration of political organisations and voters: 1 to 22 November 2026.
  • Candidate lists for both chambers due: 22 November 2026.
  • Provisional voter register: 21 January 2027.
  • Parliamentary campaigning begins: 27 February 2027.
  • Final voter register: 15 March 2027.

The dispute

Opposition groups have rejected the schedule, saying there is no political agreement on how the elections should be run. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government backs a move to direct voting; opposition figures want an agreed electoral framework first. It is unclear whether the timetable will win broad support.
