South Africa marks World Food Day in the North West with a push for farm innovation
Under the theme Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow, the national celebration at Tosca Village on 16 October will launch food security projects in a province where parts face food insecurity.

Tosca — South Africa's national World Food Day commemoration this year will focus on agricultural innovation and sustainable food production, the government news agency SAnews reports.
The event takes place on 16 October at Tosca Village, in the Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality in North West province, under the theme Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.
Who is behind it
The national Department of Agriculture, the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization are organising it together. The Agriculture Minister, Willie Aucamp, and the province's agriculture MEC, Madoda Sambatha, will lead it, with farmers, community members and development partners attending.
Why the North West
The province was chosen because parts of it face food security challenges, according to the Food and Nutrition Security Survey Report of October 2024.
What will happen
- The commemoration will show practical ways to grow more food and support vulnerable households.
- It will encourage communities to take up sustainable farming, with support from government and partners.
- Several food security projects will be launched to improve access to food, strengthen livelihoods and help end hunger.
The organisers say the aim is to show how innovation can raise farm output, build food systems that withstand shocks and secure lasting access to food.
