Africa's development 'will be funded by our own hands', tax chiefs hear in Cairo
At the African Tax Administration Forum, Egypt said technology helped lift tax revenue 27% last year without new burdens.

Cairo — African tax authorities should work together and use smart technology to raise more at home, Egyptian Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk told the African Tax Administration Forum's annual meetings in Cairo.
He said Egypt's investment in taxpayer services led to the voluntary registration of 3.5 million properties in 120 days, and helped lift tax revenue 27% last year without adding burdens.
"Africa's development will be funded by our own hands, and we have an opportunity to achieve our ambitions," said the forum's executive secretary, Mary Baine, who warned that the continent will need to double its revenues by 2050 to meet growing demands.
The council chairman, Dr Johnstone Makhubu, called domestic resources Africa's path to financing its future, but cautioned against one approach for all. Economies and capacities differ, he said, and revenue alone is not enough without strong, trusted institutions.
