Nigeria and the United Kingdom are exploring ways to strengthen cooperation in tackling misinformation, fake news and emerging threats posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to credible electoral processes.

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Vowels.

Mr Idris noted that the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence has made the spread of false information increasingly difficult to control, warning that the trend could undermine public trust and threaten the credibility of elections.

He stressed the importance of stronger collaboration and effective communication to address the challenges.

In his remarks, the British High Commissioner, Peter Vowels, called for shared strategies and closer cooperation between both countries to tackle fake news and improve communication with citizens.

The discussions reflect growing concerns over the impact of digital misinformation and emerging technologies on democratic institutions and electoral integrity.
