Nigeria's First Lady calls for an end to child marriage
Marking the International Day of the Girl, Oluremi Tinubu said protecting girls is an economic priority and asked for action, not statements.

Abuja — Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for an end to child marriage and said the country must move from statements to firm action, Vanguard reports.
In a message for the International Day of the Girl Child, which fell on Sunday, Mrs Tinubu said no girl should be denied an education, safety, health or the right to decide her own future.
Girls, she said, should be protected in law and in practice: at home, at school, in their communities and in public policy.
An economic argument
Mrs Tinubu presented the issue as more than a social duty. Protecting girls, she argued, is a matter of economic and national development, because families, communities and countries do better when girls do.
She appealed to families, traditional and community leaders, policymakers and government institutions to act.
This year's theme
The theme of the 2026 day is ending child marriage and investing in girls' rights. It describes child marriage as one of the most pressing obstacles to girls' education, health, safety and leadership.
The message, as reported, did not announce new measures or funding.
