Twenty-four people were killed and about 24 injured on Sunday morning, 25 October, when a bus and a truck collided head-on on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Makueni County.

The passengers were returning to Mombasa after the funeral of their church pastor in western Kenya. Authorities blamed improper overtaking. A passenger, Reverend Spencier Mdave, said the truck tried to overtake, met oncoming traffic and lost control as it pulled back.

The crash came three weeks after another on the same highway killed 17 people, most of them Catholic pilgrims.

The response

  • Kenya's road safety authority called for crashes to be declared a national emergency, saying about 20,000 crashes kill more than 5,000 people a year.
  • President William Ruto sent condolences and ordered inspections of all public service vehicles, urging drivers to take the utmost care and obey traffic rules.
