Nine people were declared cured of Ebola between 19 and 23 October at the Katwa Ebola treatment centre in Butembo, North Kivu.

Who went home

  • Monday 19 October: an 11-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man.
  • Wednesday 21 October: a 27-year-old health worker infected while caring for patients, a 19-year-old woman and a nine-year-old girl.
  • Friday 23 October: a 24-year-old woman.

Three other patients who left the centre were found not to have Ebola.

The centre is run by the NGO Medair with partners of the DRC health ministry. Dr Jean Mukoko Kambale, chief medical officer of the Katwa health zone, praised the staff and the cooperation between medical teams and residents, but warned that protective equipment is running out and more support partners are needed.

The survivors praised their care and urged people to go to a health centre as soon as symptoms appear: early treatment saves lives.

The wider picture

As of 22 October, North Kivu had recorded 2,291 confirmed cases and 1,325 deaths, with 265 people declared cured. Katwa is the hardest-hit zone, with 685 confirmed cases.
