Nigeria has launched a US$100 million gas distribution pipeline to supply industry across the South-east, with the investment agreement signed in Enugu on Tuesday.

The 400km network will carry gas to industrial and commercial centres in Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states. About 150 potential customers have been identified, with projected demand of 254 million standard cubic feet a day. The project is run by the South-east Development Commission.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, said the pipeline would help manufacturers in Aba, the industrial clusters of Nnewi and Onitsha, new businesses in Enugu, agro-processing in Ebonyi and Imo's own gas industry.

He said the aim was not only to supply factories that already exist, but to make possible new industrial parks and investments that have stayed on paper for lack of reliable energy. He urged the commission to judge itself by the investment and jobs it brings in.
