The National Bank of Egypt has handed over 100 motorboats, complete with fishing gear, to fishers in Luxor who could not afford their own, Daily News Egypt reports.

The boats were given free of charge under a programme called "Livelihood Boats", run with the Sonaa El Kheir Foundation. They went to the main earners of large families.

Dina Abou Taleb, the bank's head of marketing and community development, said the scheme puts "production tools directly into the hands of the workers, granting them the dignity of a sustainable income".

The foundation's chief executive, Hany Abdel Fattah, said each boat came with a motor and a full set of gear.

Luxor's governor, Abdel Muttalib Emara, asked those receiving the boats to raise their catch and to pass the craft of fishing on to younger people.
