Russia has promised to support Ghana's application to become a partner country of BRICS, Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said after meeting his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday.

Ablakwa said Russia would work to win the agreement of the group's founding members. The two met on the sidelines of the Russia–Africa Summit.

Ghana wants partner status to attract investment, widen trade and strengthen its economy. Accra has said the move does not replace its ties with Western institutions or its traditional development partners.

BRICS now has 11 members, among them founders Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Egypt and Ethiopia are its other African members.
