The search for at least seven people reported missing after a multi-storey building under construction collapsed on 9th Street in Eastleigh, Nairobi, entered its second day on Saturday, The Star reports. The building came down on Friday afternoon, 23 October.

What is known

  • Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said all 67 construction workers on site were accounted for: 66 escaped unhurt and one is in hospital in a stable condition. The Kenya Red Cross said two injured people were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital.
  • Eleven shops on the ground floor and basement were occupied at the time. Rescuers say they have made contact with some of the missing and are clearing rubble to reach the lower floors.
  • No deaths had been reported by Saturday.

The response

The Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Nairobi County, National Youth Service and Kenya Red Cross are working together at the site, and the Ministry of Health has set up a 24-hour response desk. Murkomen said affected families would get support, including counselling, and that national and county agencies would investigate the collapse with professional bodies and hold anyone responsible to account.

Families of the missing can call the Kenya Red Cross on 1199.
