The Africa Cup of Nations will keep its two-year cycle after the Confederation of African Football reversed a decision announced earlier this month.

CAF had said AFCON would move to every four years, alongside a new biennial competition, the Africa Nations League. A four-year cycle would have fitted better with the European club calendar, a frequent source of friction when African players are called up mid-season.

In changing course, CAF said the Nations League would take several years to generate the "substantial financial resources" needed to fund its competitions and make African football globally competitive and self-supporting.

The next AFCON is in 2027, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
