A new generation of filmmakers is trying to revive Guinean cinema, once a thriving industry, after years of decline.

Training programmes are teaching screenwriting, directing, editing and sound, and the Saboutech incubator helps young people develop projects and produce films. Alhassane Baldé joined it as a student and returned as a coach for its second edition, and has presented a film at FESPACO, one of Africa's leading film festivals.

Film student Hady Camara said the training has played an important part in their growth in the industry.

The obstacles

Cinemas remain closed, including Conakry's Tombolia, and the Franco-Guinean Cultural Centre is the only venue in the capital that regularly shows films. Fatoumata Segnane Condé warned that without regular funding many young filmmakers could give up.

Filmmakers say lasting funding, reliable production structures and stronger distribution are what's needed to keep the talent in the industry.
