Germany's Bayern Munich and Ajax of Amsterdam will play in Nairobi on 5 January 2027 to open the new Raila Odinga International Stadium, President William Ruto has announced.

In a recorded address broadcast on Wednesday from Russia, Ruto said the match fulfils his promise of a world-class stadium able to host top international teams.

The 60,000-seat ground on Ngong Road has been under construction since March 2024. Ruto said it has a hybrid playing surface, 52 sky boxes, video assistant refereeing and goal-line technology.

It is named after the former prime minister, who Ruto said loved football and enjoyed watching matches among ordinary fans. The fixture will be funded partly through corporate partners and is seen as a test of Kenya's ability to host major international sport.
