A court in Abidjan has adjourned until 19 November a hearing on Tidjane Thiam's election as president of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), Africanews reports. The judge decided to consolidate several legal actions into one case.

The challenges

  • Two party members argue that the PDCI's own rules were not followed in the internal election.
  • Another member wants resolutions passed at last year's party congress annulled and an interim president appointed.
  • A further case targets Thiam and his vice-president directly.

Background

In May 2025 an Ivorian court dismissed an earlier challenge that argued Thiam had lost his Ivorian nationality by becoming a French citizen in 1987, and confirmed him as party president. He was removed from the electoral roll before last year's presidential election, and in June 2025 the PDCI formed an opposition front with Laurent Gbagbo's party.
