Nearly 874,000 people in Somalia could be forced from their homes by flooding over the next three months, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warns, as above-normal rains strengthened by El Niño arrive, Africanews reports.

Preparing early

IOM says it is working with Somali authorities to strengthen the early warning system and get emergency help ready, and that the first signs of flooding are already appearing. Projections by IOM and the Danish Refugee Council suggest floods will cause 92% of displacement this season.

Floodwater can destroy crops, contaminate water and cut people off from clinics. People already living in crowded displacement sites after years of drought are most at risk.

The funding gap

IOM has secured only about 14.4% of the $16.62 million it needs to prepare for and respond to El Niño, and is asking donors to act early.
