Lagos — Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has closed its initial public offering, and the company says applications came from 120 countries on six continents, including every one of Africa's 54 nations.
The offer was sold through a wide network of banks, stockbrokers, fintech platforms and other distribution partners, which allowed retail investors across borders to apply alongside institutions.
Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Industries, said the result showed that Africans want to own and share in the industries built on the continent, not only buy what they produce. He said the aim was to open ownership to ordinary Africans rather than simply to raise money.
David Bird, the refinery's chief executive, said the international response reflected confidence in the plant's operations, scale and growth prospects.
Why it matters
- African stock markets are split by national rules and have few retail investors. An offer that reached all 54 countries points to a more connected market.
- Digital platforms played a large part in letting small investors take part.
The company did not give the final amount raised or the number of new shareholders in its announcement.
