Tanzania has announced its first major natural gas discovery in ten years: an estimated 223 billion cubic feet at the Kasa-1X ST2 well in the Mnazi Bay area of the country's south.

Energy Minister Juma Homera called the find a major milestone for Tanzania's oil and gas industry. Production is expected to begin early next month, supplying households, factories and gas-powered vehicles.

The well is jointly owned by the state-run Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and the French company Maurel & Prom.

Natural gas already produces close to 80% of Tanzania's electricity. Officials say the new supply will help keep power reliable and affordable as demand grows.
