Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force have pledged stronger measures to protect about 232,000 voters with disabilities from intimidation, harassment and discrimination at the 2027 general elections.

INEC chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the commission is giving priority to:

  • election security rules that include people with disabilities
  • targeted training for security personnel
  • accessible channels for reporting incidents
  • closer coordination between electoral and security agencies

People with disabilities make up about 0.23% of registered voters, he said, and credible elections must let every eligible Nigerian vote freely and safely.

Deputy Inspector-General Isyaku Mohammed said 20 senior officers will take the outcome back to their commands to review procedures. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot urged agencies to turn commitments into practice. The meeting in Abuja was organised by TAF Africa under the EU's democratic governance programme.
