Dakar — A week before the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games open, the medal design has been unveiled — and it is unmistakably Senegalese, APS reports.
The front: "The Roar of Youth"
The front shows a lion, symbol of Senegal and of strength and courage, whose mane is formed by two symmetrical faces — a nod to Senegalese art and to fairness and respect — topped with olive branches, recalling the ancient origins of the Games. It was designed by Spain's Pilar Barbadillo Vicario, winner of an international competition that drew entries from 103 countries. The jury included Dakar 2026 ambassador, the rapper Elzo Jamdong.
The back: the baobab
The reverse, chosen in a national Senegalese competition, shows the baobab — the tree of wisdom and long life — with the Games emblem.
The Games
About 2,700 athletes aged 17 and under will compete from 31 October to 13 November in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. It is the first Olympic event ever held in Africa.
