Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, 23 October, inaugurated the Megech Irrigation Development Project near Gondar, a dam started 18 years ago, MyJoyOnline reports.

What it delivers

  • 185 million cubic metres of water storage, across an area of 870 hectares
  • Irrigation for 17,000 hectares of farmland, to raise output and food security
  • A reliable supply of clean drinking water for Gondar and surrounding towns

The project stalled for years before Abiy revived it three years ago and saw it through. Mahama, on an official visit at Abiy's invitation, praised the Ethiopian government and people for their resilience in finishing it and said it would benefit generations to come.

Next: peace and security

On Saturday Mahama travels to Bahir Dar to chair the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, where African leaders and experts discuss peace and governance on the continent.
