Goma — Virunga National Park has recorded its 19th mountain gorilla birth of 2026. Park managers said on Monday that community trackers saw that Kagofero, a female in the Mapuwa family, had given birth. The sex of the infant is not yet known.
It is the family's second birth this year, after a female called Sebutimbiri had a male on 20 January in the Mikeno sector. The Mapuwa family now has 28 members, the third largest gorilla family monitored in the park.
The park says such births help renew a threatened population. Mountain gorillas live in the Virunga massif, shared by the DRC, Rwanda and Uganda, and in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Estimates published in 2021 put the Virunga massif population at about 350.
Founded in 1925, Virunga is Africa's oldest protected area.
