Nigerians with only a basic mobile phone will be able to apply for consumer loans through a new USSD service, SPARK, unveiled by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP).

It needs no smartphone and no internet connection, and is aimed at first-time borrowers with little or no formal credit history. The code is ∗347∗333#, with wider availability expected before the end of 2026.

The loans are meant for essentials, household equipment and productive assets, repaid over an agreed period, while raising demand for locally made goods.

The numbers so far

Managing director Uzoma Nwagba announced the service after its pilot unveiling at the first CREDICORP for All event in Aba, Abia State. As of 31 October, the corporation said, 353,561 Nigerians had received credit through its programmes, with more than ₦61.4 billion disbursed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

More than 1,800 Abia residents benefited directly at the event, getting vehicles, trade stock, digital devices and essential goods on credit from participating lenders.
