Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Chevron have announced positive results from the Nargis-2 natural gas well in the Mediterranean.

What they found

  • The well reached a depth of more than 5,000 metres.
  • It confirmed that the gas-bearing layers found in Nargis-1 extend further.
  • It found an additional gas-bearing layer with favourable characteristics.
  • Gas-bearing layers have a net thickness of up to 35 metres.

The results support appraisal of the Nargis discovery, made in 2022, and efforts to speed up its commercial development. Drilling began in May with the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).

Chevron operates the concession with Italy's Eni, the UAE's Mubadala and Egypt's Tharwa Petroleum. The ministry wants to turn undeveloped discoveries into producing reserves to raise domestic gas output.
