Egypt aims to produce up to 100,000 electric vehicles a year by 2032, as the government pushes to make more cars and parts at home and cut its import bill.

Industry Minister Khaled Hashem told Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Wednesday that a major international carmaker plans to start building three electric models in Egypt in 2027. The company, which was not named, aims to raise the share of locally made parts in its cars from 10% at first to 27% by 2032.

China's Dongfeng has already started making electric vehicles on the production lines of the state-owned El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, in partnership with SN Automotive.

Parts, batteries and motors

The plan reaches into the supply chain. An agreement between an international company, El Araby Group and the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) covers seven metal car parts, with capacity of 8 million pieces a year. MCV is working with an international partner to use locally supplied batteries in its buses, and talks are under way on making electric motors in Egypt with the AOI.

Egypt is also setting up a vocational school for mould and die making with a Brazilian industry association, upgrading a parts-testing centre in 10th of Ramadan City, and working with foreign firms on charging stations.

Madbouly said Egypt's large home market and its neighbours make car manufacturing a priority.
