Ghana's new digital speed cameras will only be used on roads where the speed limit is clearly signposted, the head of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said.

Director-General Abraham Amaliba told Joy FM on Wednesday that drivers should not be punished where the authorities have not put up the signs. "It is only fair that we do not punish people for our own inadequacies," he said.

He gave Boundary Road towards Mahama Road in Accra as an example of a route with posted limits of 50km/h, where the cameras will be active. Roads without signs will be left out of enforcement until the signs are in place.

Agreed at a ministers' meeting

Amaliba said the arrangement was confirmed on Tuesday at a meeting of the ministers for the interior, local government and transport, the police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), the NRSA and transport operators. He said it had guided where cameras were placed from the start, but admitted the public had not been told clearly enough.

The automated system, TraffiTech-GH, captures offences such as speeding and sends the evidence to a central office that issues digital tickets. Full enforcement began on 1 November after a delay to give drivers time to learn the rules. The approved limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h on highways and 100km/h on motorways.
